Housing aid approval letters won’t count in SIR process, EC informs CEO

Approval letters issued under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana, Indira Awas Yojana and the Banglar Bari project will not be treated as valid documents in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the Election Commission has clarified. The communication was sent to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Agarwal, and referred to a query dated January 21, 2026.

The clarification was issued two days after the SIR hearing concluded on February 14, prompting questions over the nearly month-long gap between the original query and the Commission’s response. The delay has raised concerns in some quarters about whether the electoral process can proceed on schedule, especially as preparations intensify.

Following the conclusion of the hearing, several petitioners questioned the intent and timing of the explanation. Some alleged that the move indicated coordination between the BJP and the Commission, claiming that the poll body had been “active” in the matter for some time. The Commission’s letter, however, stated that the clarification was issued in direct reference to the January 21 communication.
